Rick is an Officer in PennStuart’s Bristol, Tennessee office and is a member of the firm’s Insurance Defense and Professional Liability practice group. A native of Bristol, Tennessee, Rick has represented clients in the TriCities and Southwest Virginia for more than 30 years.

As a trial and appellate attorney, Rick has tried numerous cases involving medical malpractice, professional liability, commercial law, railroad law, criminal law, and personal injury. In a recent two-year period, Rick served as counsel in cases involving judgments and settlements for his clients exceeding $60 million.   He also has extensive experience handling disputes involving product liability, wills, trusts, and estates, real estate, shareholder derivative actions, contracts, joint ventures, and class actions.

Rick has successively represented clients in appeals to the U.S. Supreme Court, the 4th and 6th Circuit U.S. Courts of Appeal, and the Appellate and Supreme Courts of Tennessee and Virginia. Rick is a Tennessee Supreme Court Rule 31 Mediator and has been involved in numerous arbitrations and mediations, both as counsel and as mediator. He also represents health care providers and lawyers before the Virginia Board of Medicine, the Tennessee Board of Health Professional Boards, and other regulatory boards.

Prior to joining PennStuart, Rick served on active duty in the U.S. Navy JAG Corps, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Commander. While in the Navy, he served as trial counsel (Special and General Courts Martial), Staff Judge Advocate (for two Naval Hospitals), and as a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney.
